The Church with the Open Door Saint Elisabeth's is a hundred-year-old congregation located at the center of Glencoe. Since the early 1900's, we have been called "The Church with the Open Door." This parish was named for Elisabeth, mother of John the Baptist. Elisabeth welcomed Mary into her home in Bethany, after Mary learned she was going to give birth to Jesus. Our goal is to provide hospitality in God's name as Elisabeth did. We welcome all people, wherever they are on life's journey. Openness and hospitality are important standards for us in all of our life together. Our doors are open to all who come, whether they're seeking acceptance, a Christian community of worship, prayer and service, or simply a place to ask life's questions. In order to welcome people challenged by physical barriers, our building has handicapped accessible entrances, facilities and worship space. Our minds are open to interpretation of the Bible, the challenges of our times, opinions and rights of others, and expressions of faith different from our own. Our hearts are open to each others' needs, and to the needs of people beyond our own community: open to receive others as friends in Christ, welcoming diversity in background, tradition, race, talents and faith. St. Elisabeth's Church building itself and our congregation are small, but our buildings also house a chapel, a Nursery School, a Piano School, Boy Scouts, Alcoholics Anonymous, a School of Irish Dance and a variety of community-based events. Outside are a playground, perennial gardens, and a 44-foot Chartres style Labyrinth which is open to all. A rich life in Christ has grown up here over the years. We hope for the chance, one day, to share it with you! |
